Mathematics Anxiety, the Forgotten Affective Factor in Mathematics Education

Abstract

To explain academic achievement or failure in math, cognitive factors are usually in focus and emotional factors affecting it are ignored. This paper aims to introduce math anxiety as an influential emotional factor on math achievement. To this end, experts’ definitions of this variable are first presented and then we will discuss its prevalence and positive and negative consequences. After discussing the theoretical nature of math anxiety, especially its causes, effects of environment and instructor as well as prevention and treatment strategies are briefly reviewed. At the end, considering the status of math education in Iran, suggestions will be given for internal research.
