The Role of UNESCO in Science Promotion

Abstract

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has been established based on UN Charter, with a stated purpose to contribute to peace and security by promoting international cooperation through education, science, and culture. The promotion of science is an important theme of such cooperation that has been done through building inclusive knowledge societies, capacity building and technical assistance. This article will explore UNESCO’s activities in science promotion, focused on natural sciences, after providing a brief history of this organization. This paper will also elaborate on UNESCO’s science promotion activities on environment, climate change, water and oceanographic.
