Two Unorthodox Methods of Popularising Science

Abstract

Orthodox methods of popularising science have a long, though checkered, history which goes back to more or less the advent of modern science in seventeenth century. Much has been written about these methods which have been pursued and promoted in a more systematic manner since 1980s. The unorthodox methods, by contrast, have not received much critical attention. In this paper I shall discuss two related cases of unorthodox methods of popularising science which both concern one historical episode. These two cases though shaped and developed in particular socio-cultural contexts, are typical. In that, cases not dissimilar to them can be observed/reconstructed in other socio-cultural contexts. In this respect, it is hoped that the two cases discussed here will be of some educational value to the readers of this journal
