The Role of Science Journalists in promoting the level of community knowledge and coping with pseudoscience

Abstract

In order to develop science, to combat pseudoscience as well as to improve the scientific and cultural status in a society, publicizing science sounds an inevitable issue. Here, the most efficient and the most accessible tools are media because as their authority augments, science journalists increasingly play a crucial role in improving the level of people’s knowledge. After exploring the principal characteristics of pseudoscience and the reasons why it is welcomed by the public, the present study will examine the challenges faced by science journalists in publicizing science. In the next step, it will review a variety of functional models normally used to promote and to publicize science. Furthermore, diverse researches have affirmed that the evaluations carried out via critical thinking have successfully counteracted pseudoscience and, also, have increased the ability to assess various claims in this realm; thus, this study will analyze the role of science journalists in fighting against the prevailing of pseudoscience through teaching and expanding critical thinking as a committed assessing tool.
