Digital Media Ethics: Introducing the view of Charles Ess

Abstract

Since digital media have affected daily life, the philosophers of ethics are trying to offer an appropriate normative framework for Information Technology. This paper introduces the views of Charles Ess, as one of the contemporary thinkers in this field. Ess defends the normative approaches of the Confucian, Virtue and Care Ethics. He demonstrates that due to the role of emotion in moral decision making and more flexibility, these theories have solved the ethical problems better than consequentialist and deontological theories. Furthermore, Ess argues that pluralism is the best meta-ethical theory to encounter different values and norms in different cultures. The ethical pluralism, unlike relativism, allows an intercultural dialogue. It also, unlike absolutism, prevents cultural imperialism.
