Television entertainment and politics in the national media of the Islamic Republic of Iran

Abstract

Purpose:The lack of certainties in media policies has caused the quality of entertainment to not have a consistent approach. Ambiguities and multiplicity have challenged the development of entertainment.Therefore, it is necessary to identify the media policy to improve the quality of entertainment on television. Researches and lived experience of the researcher show no research has been done so far. Are the existing policies enough indicators to determine the real missions of the media? what is the answer to the appropriate policies to improve the quality of entertainment on television, the main goal and question and the concept of entertainment in upstream documents? The secondary questions are;what are the strengths and weaknesses of television programs in the field of entertainment?
Method: document study, analysis and extraction of results with thematic analysis method and semi-structured in-depth interview with targeted sampling method were conducted with15 educated people inside and outside the organization, program makers and national media managers.
Findings:The lack of local theorizing and policy-making in accordance with the real goals of the media, disregarding the diverse tastes and needs of the audience,stubborn and tasteful treatment of laws and structures, etc. causes the loss of the media's position in society and a serious threat that changes the approach and it can be turned into an opportunity.
Results:The late adoption of changes imposes high costs on the national media and reduces the audience's favor and the loss of new markets in the age of new media. Understanding, analyzing the space and actual media policies at that time can be used to increase the development and the capabilities of media policies to improve the quality of entertainment on IRIB TV Due to the rapid development process of the entertainment industry, the national media can follow the policies of "continuous self-repair"and information correction for its survival.
